💡 CA at a glance: Conducted by ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) — one of the largest accounting bodies in the world. CA qualification consists of 3 levels: Foundation → Intermediate → Final, plus 3 years of mandatory articleship. Total registered students: 10 lakh+. Qualified CAs in India: ~4 lakh. Demand far exceeds supply — every company, government body and individual needs a CA.

The CA Journey — 3 Levels Explained

Level 1 4 months preparation · 2 attempts/year
CA Foundation
Entry point after Class 12 (any stream). 4 papers, 400 marks total. Objective + subjective mix. The easiest level but don't underestimate — 35–40% fail here due to poor preparation.
Paper 1: Accounting (100 marks) Paper 2: Business Laws (100 marks) Paper 3: Maths & LR & Statistics (100 marks) Paper 4: Business Economics (100 marks)
Pass rate: 25–35% Passing marks: 40% per paper + 50% aggregate Exam fee: ₹1,500 Who can appear: 12th pass, any stream
Level 2 18–24 months · Articleship starts here
CA Intermediate
Two groups of 4 papers each (8 papers total). Can clear both groups together or separately. Articleship (3-year practical training) begins after clearing at least Group 1 of Intermediate. This is where most students struggle — the jump from Foundation to Intermediate is steep.
Group 1: Advanced Accounting, Corporate & Other Laws, Taxation, Cost & Management Accounting Group 2: Auditing & Assurance, Financial Management & Strategic Management, Enterprise IT & SM
Pass rate: 10–20% per group Passing marks: 40% per paper + 50% per group Exam fee: ₹2,700 per group Tip: Clear Group 1 first to start articleship faster
Level 3 During last year of articleship
CA Final
The final frontier. Two groups of 4 papers each. Appear during the last year of articleship. Passing both groups makes you a qualified CA and gives you the right to use the prefix "CA" before your name. The most comprehensive professional exam in India.
Group 1: Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Risk Management, Corporate Laws Group 2: Strategic Cost Management, Direct Tax, Indirect Tax (GST), Multidisciplinary Case Study
Pass rate: 10–15% per group Passing marks: 40% per paper + 50% per group Exam fee: ₹3,200 per group Result: Qualified CA — post-nominal CA after your name

CA Articleship — Everything You Need to Know

Articleship is 3 years of mandatory practical training under a registered CA. It is as important as the exams — your articleship firm and experience determines your first job quality and salary.

Types of Articleship Firms

Articleship tip: Your articleship firm is more important than your exam rank for your first job. A Big 4 articleship with average exam performance often gets better job offers than a small firm articleship with top exam rank. Try to get Big 4 or a reputed mid-size firm. Apply to Big 4 articleship vacancies on LinkedIn and ICAI's portal — they recruit throughout the year.

⚠️ Honest reality check: CA has a ~30% pass rate at Foundation, ~15% at Intermediate and ~12% at Final. Only 5–7% of those who register for Foundation ultimately qualify as CAs. This is not to discourage you — it is to prepare you. CA rewards persistence above intelligence. Most successful CAs needed 2–3 attempts at Intermediate and Final. The ones who quit after one failure are the majority. The ones who keep going are the qualified CAs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — this is the most recommended path. Do BCom (correspondence or regular) alongside CA. BCom provides a degree backup if CA takes longer than expected. Many universities (DU SOL, IGNOU, Symbiosis) offer correspondence BCom that can be managed alongside CA preparation. Additionally, BCom gives you the graduation qualification needed for non-CA jobs if you decide to change paths. CA Foundation + BCom simultaneously is the standard plan for most Commerce students after 12th.
ICAI organises campus placement drives twice a year (January and August) for newly qualified CAs. Companies including Big 4 firms, investment banks, large corporates and MNCs recruit directly. The 2025 campus median offer was ~₹8.5 LPA. Top international offers (Singapore, UAE, UK) go up to ₹25–40 LPA. To participate, you must have cleared both groups of CA Final. Preparation for campus includes interview prep for technical questions (Ind AS, taxation, audit) and HR rounds. The ICAI campus is genuinely one of the best placement systems for any professional qualification in India.
Yes — more so than before. AI is automating basic bookkeeping and data entry (which were never CA-level work anyway). What AI cannot replace: complex audit judgement, tax planning strategy, M&A advisory, regulatory interpretation, and client relationships — all core CA competencies. In fact, CAs who understand AI tools and data analytics are commanding 20–30% salary premiums. The ICAI has also added Data Analytics and IT audit to the CA curriculum. CA in 2026 is not threatened by AI — it is enhanced by it.
CA if you want to work in audit, taxation, compliance, or as a CFO at an Indian company. CA is the gold standard for accounting and finance in India. CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) if you want to work in investment management, equity research, portfolio management or investment banking — CFA is globally recognised for these roles. CFA is 3 levels, exam-only (no articleship), takes 3–4 years. Many investment bankers and equity analysts in India hold both CA and CFA — an extremely powerful combination paying ₹20–50 LPA even at mid-level. See Big 4 careers guide →
Yes — ICAI has Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with accounting bodies in the UK (ICAEW), Australia (CPA Australia), Canada (CPA Canada) and the US (AICPA). These MRAs give Indian CAs exemptions from many papers in foreign qualifications — making it faster to become globally qualified. UAE, Singapore and Gulf countries actively hire Indian CAs for finance roles — UAE especially has a large Indian CA community. The combination of Indian CA + ACCA (UK) is one of the most powerful international finance credentials available to Indian professionals.
