Subject-Wise Strategy — Where to Focus
🌿
Biology
360 marks — 50% of paper
High weightage chapters: Human Reproduction, Genetics & Evolution, Plant Kingdom, Human Physiology, Ecology & Environment, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Animal Kingdom, Molecular Basis of Inheritance
Books: NCERT Class 11 + 12 (read 5–6 times minimum) → Trueman's Biology Vol 1 & 2 → Previous year question papers. NCERT is the Bible — 90%+ Biology questions come directly from NCERT text, diagrams and examples.
⚗️
Chemistry
180 marks — 25% of paper
High weightage chapters: Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, Organic Chemistry (Carbonyl Compounds, Amines, Biomolecules), Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Solutions, p-Block Elements, Thermodynamics
Books: NCERT Chemistry Class 11 + 12 (mandatory) → NCERT Exemplar for practice → Physical Chemistry by N Avasthi (problems) → MS Chauhan for Organic Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry — stick to NCERT only.
⚡
Physics
180 marks — 25% of paper
High weightage chapters: Laws of Motion, Work-Energy-Power, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects, Modern Physics (Dual Nature, Atoms, Nuclei), Optics, Thermodynamics, Oscillations & Waves
Books: NCERT Physics Class 11 + 12 (theory) → HC Verma Concepts of Physics Vol 1 & 2 (problem solving) → DC Pandey (objective questions). Physics requires daily problem practice — reading theory without solving is insufficient.
12-Month Study Plan for NEET 2026
Month 1–2
Build the Foundation
Complete Class 11 NCERT for all 3 subjects. Don't skip chapters — weak foundations cause problems later. Focus on understanding, not memorisation. Make short notes for Biology diagrams and Chemistry reactions.
Month 3–4
Class 12 Syllabus
Complete Class 12 NCERT for all subjects. Pay extra attention to Genetics, Evolution, Reproduction (Biology) — these chapters carry the most marks. For Chemistry: Organic reactions and mechanisms. For Physics: Electrostatics and Modern Physics.
Month 5–6
Reference Books + Problem Practice
Shift to reference books — HC Verma for Physics, MS Chauhan for Organic Chemistry, Trueman's for Biology. Solve chapter-wise MCQs daily. Build speed and accuracy. Start timing yourself — 3 minutes per question is the NEET benchmark.
Month 7–8
Previous Year Papers
Solve last 10 years of NEET papers — this is non-negotiable. NEET repeats concepts regularly. Analyse every wrong answer. Keep an error log. 25–30% of NEET questions are directly similar to previous years.
Month 9–10
Full Mock Tests
Give one full mock test every week under exam conditions — same time slot as NEET (2:00 PM), same duration (3h 20min), no phone. After each mock: analyse errors subject-wise, identify weak chapters, revise them before next mock. Target: 550+ consistently.
Month 11–12
Revision + Mock Intensification
Revise short notes, NCERT highlights, formula sheets daily. Increase mocks to 2 per week. Focus on accuracy — negative marking kills scores. In last 2 weeks: only NCERT revision and easy mock tests. No new topics. Sleep 7–8 hours — memory consolidates during sleep.
✅ The Biology strategy that works: Read each NCERT Biology chapter → make a 1-page summary → draw all diagrams from memory → solve chapter PYQs → repeat. Do this for all 38 Biology chapters. Students who do this for Biology alone score 300+ out of 360 — which is enough to compensate for average Physics and Chemistry performance.

Best Books for NEET 2026 — Complete List
Biology
NCERT Biology Class 11 & 12 — mandatory, read 5–6 times minimum
Trueman's Biology Vol 1 & 2 — best reference for detailed explanations
MTG Fingertips Biology — chapter-wise MCQs, excellent for practice
Previous Year NEET Biology PYQs — last 10 years, mandatory
Chemistry
NCERT Chemistry Class 11 & 12 — mandatory for Inorganic and theory
MS Chauhan Organic Chemistry — best for organic reactions and mechanisms
N Avasthi Physical Chemistry — problem-solving for physical chemistry
NCERT Exemplar Chemistry — higher order thinking questions
Physics
NCERT Physics Class 11 & 12 — theory foundation
HC Verma Concepts of Physics Vol 1 & 2 — best for concept clarity
DC Pandey Objective Physics — MCQ practice, chapter-wise
Ignoring NCERT Biology — the single biggest mistake. Read every line, every footnote, every diagram caption
Starting with coaching material before NCERT — NCERT first, always
Not solving previous year papers — PYQs are the best mock you can give
Studying 12+ hours without breaks — leads to burnout. 6–8 focused hours beats 12 distracted hours
Attempting questions you're unsure about — negative marking is brutal. If less than 70% confident, skip
Changing strategy 2 months before exam — stick to your plan, revise what you know
Ignoring weak chapters vs chasing strong ones — every chapter has equal importance in NEET marking
⚠️ On coaching vs self-study: Coaching helps with structure, doubt clearing and peer pressure. But thousands of NEET toppers are self-studiers. If you're disciplined, NCERT + reference books + PYQs + online doubt clearing (YouTube: Unacademy NEET, Physics Wallah, Vedantu NEET) is fully sufficient. Coaching is not a substitute for individual effort — it is a support structure.
Frequently Asked Questions
As of 2026, there is no attempt limit for NEET UG. You can appear as many times as you want until the upper age limit. The age limit is 17 years minimum (lower) and no upper age limit for General category (Supreme Court removed the upper age cap). However, the earlier you crack it, the better — starting medical college at 18–20 vs 22–24 makes a meaningful difference to your career timeline.
A drop year is worth it if: you scored 450–520 and genuinely believe targeted preparation can get you to 580+. It is not worth it if: you scored below 380 without preparation — that gap requires more than one year. It is also not worth it if your mental health or family situation makes a full year of isolation difficult. Many successful doctors took a drop — but make the decision based on realistic self-assessment, not peer pressure or parental expectations. A productive drop year with a proper schedule is fundamentally different from an unstructured one.
Since 2020, AIIMS no longer has a separate entrance exam. All 15 AIIMS institutes admit students through NEET UG scores only — there is no separate AIIMS MBBS exam. AIIMS admissions happen through a separate counselling (AACCC) using NEET ranks. To get into AIIMS New Delhi — the most prestigious — you typically need a NEET score of 670+ (General category), which means being in the top 100–200 ranks nationally.
Many excellent options exist: BDS (Dentistry) — lower NEET cutoff (~450), strong career, ₹15–50 LPA for experienced dentists. BAMS/BHMS (Ayurveda/Homeopathy) — NEET-based admission, government colleges available, growing demand. BPT (Physiotherapy) — excellent career, ₹5–20 LPA, no NEET required at most colleges. BSc Nursing — strong government jobs and abroad opportunities. BSc Life Sciences + Research — CSIR-NET → research career, PhD abroad. Do not let one exam define your entire medical career — the healthcare field has many paths. See all After 12th Science options →
Honest answer: stress is inevitable but manageable. What works: Fixed daily schedule with defined study and break times (the brain needs predictability). Physical activity — even 20–30 minutes of walking daily improves memory consolidation and reduces cortisol. Weekly mock tests — they convert anxiety into data. One day of partial rest per week — Sunday light revision only, no new chapters. Social connection — complete isolation is counterproductive. Talk to family, friends, or a mentor regularly. If stress is severe and persistent, speak to a counsellor — NEET preparation has high mental health costs that are often underacknowledged.
