📊 About IIM Ahmedabad

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) is India's most prestigious and globally recognised management institution. Founded in 1961 under the Government of India, it was the vision of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and is often referred to as India's Harvard Business School. It is the only IIM to hold EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation — a mark of global academic excellence.

IIMA has been ranked #1 in Management by NIRF every year since 2021, and is placed #31 globally by the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2025. Its 120-acre campus in Ahmedabad — designed by the legendary architect Louis Kahn — is a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it one of the most architecturally celebrated campuses in the world.

The flagship PGP (Post Graduate Programme) — equivalent to a two-year full-time MBA — has an acceptance rate of less than 0.1%, making it statistically harder to get into than Harvard Business School. With over 137,000 general category applicants choosing IIMA as their preference in a recent CAT cycle, only a tiny fraction receives offers.

What makes IIM Ahmedabad India's top B-school: Unmatched alumni network in Indian and global business. EQUIS accreditation — the only IIM with it. 100% placement rate year after year. Average package of ₹35+ LPA with no minimum below ₹26 LPA. A 120-acre UNESCO-recognised campus. And a faculty-to-student ratio that enables deep, personalised learning.

🎯 Admission Process & CAT Cutoff 2026

Admission to IIM Ahmedabad PGP is a rigorous two-stage process. Stage 1 is shortlisting for AWT & PI based on CAT 2025 scores and academic profile. Stage 2 is the final selection based on AWT, PI, CAT score, and overall profile.

New for 2026: IIM Ahmedabad has significantly raised its minimum qualifying CAT cutoff for the 2026-28 PGP batch. General/EWS candidates now need 95 percentile overall and 85 in each section — up from the previous 80 overall and 70 sectional. This is a major change aspirants must note.

CategoryOverall CAT PercentileSectional (QA / DILR / VARC)
General / EWS9585 (each section)
NC-OBC9080 (each section)
SC8575 (each section)

Important distinction: Meeting the minimum cutoff only qualifies you for consideration — it does not guarantee a PI call. IIMA shortlists for AWT & PI based on a composite score where CAT carries 65% weight + academics 25% + diversity factors 10%. For a realistic shot at a PI call as a GEM (General + Engineering + Male) candidate, target 99+ percentile in CAT.

  • Step 3 — PI Shortlist: IIMA releases AWT & PI shortlist in the second week of January 2026. Check iima.ac.in for shortlist status.
  • Step 4 — AWT & PI: Attend Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview at your chosen city. Prepare for case-based discussions, your academic background, and current affairs.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The minimum qualifying CAT percentile for General/EWS category in 2026-28 batch is 95 overall and 85 in each section (QA, DILR, VARC). However, just meeting this minimum does not guarantee a PI call. For a realistic chance at being shortlisted for AWT & PI as a GEM (General, Engineering, Male) candidate, target 99+ percentile. Women, non-engineers, and candidates with work experience have slightly better chances at the same percentile due to diversity weightage.
Work experience is not mandatory for the PGP (MBA) programme. Fresh graduates can and do get into IIMA directly after their bachelor's degree. However, work experience adds value to your profile and can be a differentiator — especially since the final selection gives 15% weightage to profile factors including work experience, academic performance, and diversity. For the PGPX (Executive MBA), a minimum of 4 years of work experience is compulsory.
Yes. IIMA offers multiple scholarships: (1) Need-Based Scholarship — for students with family gross annual income below ₹15 Lakhs; up to ₹4 Lakhs/year. (2) T. Thomas Scholarship — merit-cum-means, funded by alumni. (3) OPJEMS Scholarship — industry-funded. (4) Exit Scholarship — for students opting out of placements to pursue entrepreneurship, NGO work, or doctoral studies. (5) SC/ST students get a fixed stipend under government reservation scholarship schemes. Most nationalized banks also offer educational loans at concessional rates for IIM admission.
IIMA's Personal Interview is known for being intellectually rigorous and less structured than other IIMs. The panel often dives deep into your academic background (expecting genuine mastery of your subjects), your work experience (probing actual decisions and outcomes), and your opinions on business/economic issues. IIMA also uses an Analytical Writing Test (AWT) — candidates write an analytical essay on a given topic before the PI. The PI carries 50% of the final selection weightage — arguably the most heavily weighted PI among all IIMs.
The ROI is exceptional. At a total investment of ₹26.5 Lakhs, you graduate earning a minimum ₹26 LPA and an average of ₹35.22 LPA. The loan payback period at these salaries is typically 1–2 years. Over a 5-year post-MBA career, an IIMA graduate typically earns ₹1.5–2 Crore cumulatively — many times the investment. The alumni network, brand recognition, and doors opened by "IIM Ahmedabad" on a resume cannot be quantified purely in salary terms. For anyone serious about a top career in consulting, finance, or corporate leadership in India, IIMA offers the highest ROI of any MBA in the country.
