What Does a Lawyer Do?

A lawyer advises clients on their legal rights, represents them in courts, drafts legal documents, and helps individuals and organisations navigate the law. In India, the entry qualification is an LLB (Bachelor of Legislative Law) — either a 5-year integrated programme (BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB) after 12th, or a 3-year LLB after any graduation.

Law is one of India's most versatile careers — a law degree opens doors in courts, corporations, government, judiciary, civil services, and the Gulf's booming legal market.

Important — Indian LLB and Gulf court practice: Indian lawyers CANNOT practice litigation in UAE courts directly. UAE court litigation requires local bar membership and Arabic. How to Become a Lawyer — Roadmap After 10th

  • 1
10th → Any stream works (Arts, Commerce, or Science)
Unlike medicine or engineering, law has no stream restriction. Arts (with Political Science, Economics, History) is most aligned. Commerce works for corporate law. Science also works — many tech lawyers come from PCM backgrounds. Choose what you enjoy; all streams are valid.
  • 2
11th–12th → Begin CLAT preparation early
CLAT tests English, Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. Start preparation from 11th for NLU-level scores. Top coaching: CLAT Possible, LegalEdge, Career Launcher. Self-study is viable with good mock tests. Read newspapers daily — GK and current affairs are critical in CLAT.
  • 3
12th → Appear for CLAT (for NLUs) or AILET (for NLU Delhi)
CLAT 2026 results are out — CLAT 2027 applications open around July 2026. Minimum 12th with 45% marks (40% for reserved). Any stream. Top 100 rank → NLSIU/NALSAR/NLU Delhi. Top 500 → good NLUs. Score well on English and Legal Reasoning sections.
  • 4
BA LLB / BBA LLB (5 years) → Intern every semester
Internships are everything in law. Intern at law firms, High Court chambers, district courts, and corporate legal departments. Most Tier 1 firms give pre-placement offers (PPOs) to top interns. Do at least 5–6 internships during the 5-year course.
  • 5
Enroll with Bar Council of India → Become an Advocate
After LLB, enrol with your State Bar Council under the Bar Council of India. This gives you the legal right to practice as an advocate. Required for all litigation. Corporate law firm jobs do not require bar enrolment but it is standard practice.
  • 6
Junior lawyer at firm or litigation → Build practice → Specialise
Corporate track: Tier 1 firm → senior associate → partner (10–15 yrs). Litigation track: junior advocate in a chamber → develop clientele → independent practice → senior advocate. Gulf track: 3–5 years India experience → apply to UAE/Saudi corporate legal roles.
🎓

Roadmap After 12th — Two Paths

⚡ Path A — 5-Year Integrated BA LLB (Recommended)
  • 1
12th (any stream, 45%+) → CLAT or AILET
CLAT for 25 NLUs. AILET for NLU Delhi only. Both are separate, held annually. Top CLAT rank = NLSIU, NALSAR, NLU Delhi, WBNUJS — India's most respected law schools.
  • 2
5-year BA LLB or BBA LLB
BA LLB: best for litigation, UPSC, and judiciary. BBA LLB: best for corporate law and business. BCom LLB: best for tax law and finance. Choose based on career goal.
  • 3
    Internships → Placement → Specialisation
NLU median campus placement 2026: ₹20 LPA. Top NLU offers from Tier 1 firms: ₹18L–₹22.5L LPA. Non-NLU law college: ₹3L–₹8L LPA. Difference is significant — CLAT prep pays off.
📋 Path B — Graduate First, Then 3-Year LLB

Complete any bachelor's degree (BA, B.Com, BSc, BCA, BTech) → then appear for law school entrance (CUET PG, MHCET Law, or direct admission) → 3-year LLB. This path suits career changers. Engineers doing LLB are increasingly sought in tech law, patent law, and AI regulation — a fast-growing and high-paying niche in 2026.

Future Demand — Is Law a Good Career in 2026?

  • India's legal market is valued at $1.3 billion and growing. Corporate India's legal spend is rising as startups, MNCs, and PE firms expand. More deals = more lawyers needed.
  • New laws creating new specialisations: DPDP Act (data privacy), AI regulation, Competition Amendment Act 2023, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code — each one creating demand for specialised lawyers. Early movers in new legal areas earn a premium.
  • Gulf legal market booming: UAE's Vision 2030 and Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 are driving massive infrastructure, construction, and corporate transactions — all needing English-speaking lawyers with Indian corporate law training.
  • AI won't replace lawyers — it will replace junior tasks like basic research and document review. Lawyers who use AI tools will replace those who don't. The advice, judgment, negotiation, and advocacy functions remain irreplaceable.
  • Judiciary expansion: India is filling 25,000+ judicial vacancies across district courts. Judiciary is now a high-priority government career with strong pay, respect, and stability.

CareerShuru verdict

Law is a long game — the early years test patience and financial resilience, especially in litigation. But the ceiling is among the highest of any career in India. A top Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court earns ₹2Cr–₹10Cr+ annually. A General Counsel at a Fortune 500 India entity earns ₹60L–₹3Cr. A Gulf corporate lawyer earns ₹50L–₹1.2Cr+ tax-free. The key decision point is CLAT — NLU graduates start at 3–5× the salary of non-NLU graduates. Invest in CLAT prep. Choose your specialisation with intent. Give it time. The returns in law are proportional to patience and expertise.
